Instant and Nutritious Travel Food

Traveling is fun but with the present conditions around, it seems quite difficult to get food that is hygienic. And especially when we travel with kids, it becomes even more difficult due to their preferences. I always make sure I am traveling kid friendly with sufficient instant food that is easier to cook at any given place.

To make it simple, below is the recipe for an instant dal/sambar dish which anybody (including adults) can relish with slight modifications depending on their facilities while traveling. I have been relying on this recipe since my daughter was born. And I make sure I carry this instant mix wherever we travel.

What do we need ? Dals - Toor dal, Masoor dal, black masoor dal, yellow moong dal. Oil, curry leaves, kasuri methi, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, turmeric, asafoetida, garlic. How do we make it ? 🥣You can take equal cups of all the dals. (50- 100gms approx) 🥣Wash and pat dry them, place these dals in the sun to completely dry (but this step is optional).

🥣 Or you can directly roast them on slow flame for about 10 to 15 mins and set them to cool.

🥣Grind this mixture into powder, preferably smooth.

🥣 Take a deep pan, add a tablespoon of oil, add the mustard, cumin seeds, curry leaves, asafoetida (hing), turmeric, garlic and kasuri methi.

🥣 Add the powdered dal into the same pan and mix thoroughly.

🥣 Let this mixture cool and you are ready to pack it for your trip.

This is how the mixture looks.

Now what do we do with this mixture?

🥗 I had the ease of carrying a small electric cooker (my mommy brain always works).

🥗 I buy few onions and tomatoes from a nearby store. (You can carry them if you can)

🥗 I add some veggies and water to boil, add 3 spoons of instant dal mixture, little salt and leave it to boil.

🥗 You can make this thicker or thinner/liquidy suiting your taste and preferences.

🥗 You can as well skip the veggies and just boil the dal, use it as a soup by making it thinner.

🥗 You can add little rice while boiling, would yield you 2 cups of dal rice.

🥗 You can just suit your toddler's or your requirements.

🥗This also stands helpful for some sick days at home as it takes no cooking effort.

This mixture is preservation free, you can add salt to preserve it. This sits on your kitchen counter for 3 weeks without refrigeration. You can refrigerate this mixture for 2 more months.

Hope you enjoy this quick recipe the next time you travel alone or with your kids.
